The Truth About Online Anorexia 3/5

Fearne Cotton examines the ongoing trend for super-slim women and immerses herself in the worrying world of pro-ana websites who encourage anorexia and starvation as a life choice. As Fearne explores the diet and exercise regime of a pro-ana, shell try some of the extreme regimes that they endorse and meet other girls whove embraced the same lifestyle. She will explore the seductive nature of these support groups, examine the world of competitive dieting, and look at relationships that ordinary women have with each other when it comes to diet and body image.

This vlog was recorded on January 18th by Asmaa Mahfouz, the girl who helped start it all. She had shared it on her Facebook, and it had gone viral. It was so powerful and so popular, that it drove Egyptians by the thousands into Tahrir Square, and drove the Egyptian government to block Facebook . I’ll shut up now and let Asma talk. I adore how there are so much girls commenting, just like the ones she talks about. Yes, anorexia is an illness, but hey, much of us just skip meals on pure vain. It´s a problem, and its intelligent to talk about it..
She is obviously not “making fun of girls who have mental illnesses,” Absurd ! Why would she ? She is beautiful..

At least Fearne understood it. Most people in this world think “OMG you’re so skinny…EAT SOMETHING! Are you stupid?” and she now understands that anorexia isn’t like that. I actually think Fearne was doing a good thing.

@heyalexandria
I don’t think Fearne was making fun of girls (and boys) with anorexia. If she was making fun of them, she would be laughing and calling them pathetic human beings. She was just trying to wrap her head around the whole concept of physically hurting yourself to be thin. I was once anorexic and am recovering from a relapse and was not offended at all by anything Fearne did or said–in fact, I was glad she took the time to really try to understand this disease and help people.

You can’t expect someone who doesn’t have the disorder to fully understand how those individuals feel. She’s trying to get an insight into something that is running ramped everywhere….I give her credit for trying to help others see what having an eating disorder is and not what it may look like.

@heyalexandria she doesn’t make fun of people who have a mental illness. she makes fun of the people who want to do that to their bodies and decided to. they see it as a life style.
and btw it’s not “making fun” it’s deterrence.

Just because it’s a mental illness doesn’t make it acceptable. If there was a support website for serial murdering sociopaths nobody would accept that either.

It’s just sad that people feel the need to be something that isn’t real or natural.

@rebeccacamilleri After watching Skinny Kids here on YT I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s encountered a young relative making remarks about their nonexistent fatness and decided to investigate. I see where you’re coming from, but you don’t have to be, say, mentally unstable, to have a deep interest in the mentally unstable and how they go on about in their everyday life. :]

Comment by rebeccacamilleri

@ShutYourEyesAndSing I have seen the other parts. I get what she is doing, but my point is, I dont understand why fearne, as said before , who has evidently never been concerned with her weight, is the one tackling the issue cos its totally foreign to her. She is, physically, what a lot of these girls aspire to be, thats why she found herself on one of the thinspo sites.What Im trying to say is , weight wise, its easy to be fearne, so she dsnt understand where these girls are coming from.

@publius123dolphin
So you think that newspapers are an accurate report of what is going on in the real world.
You are fucked in the head. Newspapers/news stations are out to make money and to do that headlines have to be as dramatic as possible.
A newspaper headline that says ”CAT STUCK UP TREE” will not sell newspapers but ”CAT STUCK UP TREE AFTER JAPAN NUCLEAR REACTOR EXPLOSION” will.
Newspapers like The Sun love you, brain dead customers. *shakes head*

@Zed1967 Let’s try some headlines, from right-wing and left-wing sources alike: “How Mohammed Bouazizi Sparked a Revolution” TIME MAGAZINE “Slap to a Man’s Pride Set Off Tumult in Tunisia” NEW YORK TIMES “The Story of Mohamed Bouazizi, the man who toppled Tunisia” INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TIMES “The specific event that is thought to be what triggered the spreading unrest in the Middle East…” THE SPECTATOR “How a man setting fire to himself sparked an uprising in Tunisia” THE GUARDIAN UK.

@Zed1967 Don’t be vulgar; pay more attention to nuances in language. A “cause” may be: necessary; sufficient; necessary-AND-sufficient; or contributory. No one event causes important social change. But a single event certainly can be a necessary — or important contributory — cause of said change. That is what is implied by a term like “catalyst” (my term) or “spark” or “precipitant”.

It is recognized by experts of all political ideologies that this man served such a role in the Arab Spring.
